Rumours And Lies
There is always someone who thinks Jesus didn’t die on the cross, that he was helped down and escaped, that he married Mary Magdalene, that he lived till the age of 83 and had ten children, that the truth is hidden deep in the Vatican, or some other variation on these stories.
But ask them where they found out these pieces of information and there likely won’t be a source they can name.
Where do these rumours come from? Is it from the books of authors who channel information to find out the ‘truth’ about Jesus? Or someone whose heard something from someone?
Yesterday I got in conversation with someone online, who said that the details of Jesus’s alternative life were contained in the dead sea scrolls, and would not listen to reason when I tried to explain that the dead sea scrolls are the old Testament only, choosing rumours over obvious and provable facts.
In the past few years many of us have woken up to the massive lies in our culture and been on a search down rabbit holes to find the truth, so it’s understandable that people might think that the hidden, secret, counter-cultural information is the truth.
And while it is the case in lots of respects, when it come to Jesus, it’s really not that complicated.
It’s clear from reading the Bible, that God wants us to know the truth, that he’s not going to allow some evil people to hide it in a secret vault.
Yes there is evil in the world, there is much that is hidden. This evil dates right back to the garden and the tree of knowledge of good and evil, when Adam and Eve made the decision to learn about good and evil. Satan is the ‘father of lies’ and the ‘master of confusion’ so there will be lots in our reality that is hidden, twisted and manipulated.
But God is good. And the opposite of evil. So he gives us truth, in a simple, straight-forward manner. Not hidden in a vault, but right there in front of our eyes in the best-selling book of all time. This may seem hard to believe when we’ve been deep in the hidden corners to find truth, but this is the one truth God offers us so that despite all the evil in this world, we are offered one way out, through Jesus.
When it comes to believing alternative stories and histories, we always need to trace information back to its earliest source. Just because something sounds cool or counter-cultural, or secret or hidden does not make it true.
The Bible remains the most accurate and earliest source of what happened in Jesus’s life, verified by historians that lived at the same time as Jesus and wrote down their observations.
Everything else is a lie spun by the devil, to seduce people into rejecting the Gospel.
‘In their case the god of this world (satan) has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.’ 2 Corinthians 4:4
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ John 8:32
