I am not a very visually aware person and yesterday, as I walked past this abandoned building site on my road, as I have done most days in the last three years, I suddenly realized what the words said;
‘Christ is the answer’
And I believe it is true.
Last week I was reading some information about people who do not believe and the idea that God will find a way to share the gospel with them, in every corner of the earth, in every most unreachable place, somehow that message will reach there.
It occurred to me that I had never heard the gospel, not till 2021 when I read the last book of the Bible and then decided to read from to the beginning and began watching Pastors on YouTube who explained the story.
That humanity was in a mess since the fall in the garden of Eden and God made a plan to send his only son Jesus as a sacrifice for the sins of mankind. That Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead three days after. And that anyone who believed in Jesus, would be forgiven for all their sins and would go to heaven when they died.
I hadn’t realized until reading the Bible that Jesus actually literally rose from the dead. I’d always thought it meant he floated up to heaven, but no, his actual body rose from the dead and wondered around on earth talking to his disciples and followers.
‘The Case For Christ’ is a fascinating book written by an investigative journalist who became upset when his wife became a Christian Ashe thought she’d turn into a boring prude. He set out to find evidence to disprove the facts of Jesus’s life. He is now the Pastor of a Church.
Maybe you’ve heard this story a million times and not believed it. Or maybe the details are new.
I knew I didn’t know a vital detail in this story as I recall just a few years ago listening to Patti Smith sing, ‘Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine.’ And for the first time after many years of listening to that song, and not consciously thinking about them, I wondered, ‘’dying for sins, what does that even mean?’
I’d never properly heard the gospel. I don’t come from a religious family. I didn’t go to a religious school, but our headteacher was an enthusiastic Christian and we sang hymns in assembly every morning. But despite this, I don’t recall anyone ever actually telling me the gospel.
Or perhaps they did and it was like the graffiti I walked past without reading. I did not have the ears to hear.
I do recall as a teenager one Friday night standing at the bus stop to go the Pub and a friendly girl came up to me to invite me to her house to learn about Jesus.
No thanks, I said. How boring I thought. A night without alcohol talking about Christianity?
This is one of the biggest lies I realised our society tells about Christianity; that it’s boring, that it’s for the strait-laced old ladies, and conventional types.
And yes I’m sure there is plenty of that.
But genuine spirit led Christianity is quite the opposite and the Bible is clear we won’t fit into society if we follow this path. It is fundamentally unconventional.
But there’s a certain someone who loves to invert truth, so we are told the lie that it is boring, or it has that appearance on the surface or in inauthentic churches.
Since following Christ I am happier and calmer than I’ve ever been and close friends and family have commented on the change. It’s far from boring once the Holy Spirit brings the words of the Bible to life and it becomes evident how God works in people’s lives for good.
There are some Christian’s who believe that the only reason this human reality is still playing out is that, everyone needs to hear the gospel first before it ends.
And so here I am uncomfortable as it feels, knowing I’ll get scorn and hatred for doing so, pressing post.
Christ is the answer, not Christ consciousness, or the God within, or other deceptions designed to lead people off the trail.
Jesus Christ the son of God. Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life, and no-one comes to the father but through me.’
